A horse stuck up to its neck in mud was in a “bit of a mess” in South Carolina, officials said.

Photos posted on Facebook by Richburg Fire-Rescue and Chester County Animal Control show the “large fellow” trapped in the deep mud on Friday, May 26, in a wooded area in Chester County.

Rescuers didn’t say how the horse got stuck — but it was clear it wasn’t getting out on its own.

Luckily, rescuers were called to the scene and came up with an “action plan,” the fire department said.

Photos show rescuers securing large straps around the horse before it was safely pulled out of the mud. The horse was checked out by a vet and, although covered it mud, was determined to be OK, animal control said.

Animal control thanked the rescue crews and civilians who helped free the horse.

“We are honored to work alongside such amazing and knowledgeable personnel,” animal control said.

Chester County is about 60 miles north of Columbia.
